Nourishing Food + Community
Our family farm is now in its 8th year! We have been providing the kind folks of Richmond as well as many local high end restaurants with our high quality nutrient dense food grown in our naturally amended soil in Hanover County. Farming is not our job, it is our family’s way of life. We believe in family values and offering the very best to our local community.
We are now ready to offer our very first CSA to a limited number of families in the Richmond and Cold Harbor area. A CSA is Community Supported Agriculture and is a membership where by committing with us at the beginning of the growing season, you share the rewards and risks of our farm. By doing this, you are helping us be a successful farm by allowing us to bear the up front costs of starting each spring. Seeds, tools, and maintenance costs all add up very quickly . Since you will be helping us early, we will do our best to give you added value each week as a reward. As a member of our CSA you will have direct access to the very best food we grow, the same food we feed our family. As part of your membership, we will let you know what you will be getting in your bag each week and will also give you a sample menu weekly (the same menu our family will be enjoying for the week) and easy recipes that accompany the plan. Each week you will be receiving a bag of naturally grown produce beginning in mid-May and ending the last week of September.
What will you get in your bag?
Farmer Matt is known in the Richmond area for his wonderful field greens as well as his delicate baby arugula. Each week you will receive either a bag of baby arugula or fresh field greens. Throughout the season, you will find baby bok choi, kale, or tatsoi. Each week, you will find 7 – 10 items in your bag!
In the spring you will also find asian turnips, beets, radishes, romaine lettuces, leeks, spring onions, spring garlic, squash, carrots, broccoli, and swiss chard, and spinach. We will rotate this produce through the season so you don’t get tired of having the same things.
Once summer begins, you will receive a variety of microgreens, cured garlic, cured onions, summer squash, cherry tomatoes, Hanover tomatoes, basil, green beans, peppers, fennel, okra, squash, zucchini, roasting peppers, shishito peppers, bell peppers, different types of egg plant. Don’t forget you will also be getting either a bag of arugula or field greens each week throughout the season!
The fall will continue to bring you microgreens, asian turnips, beets, radishes, romaine lettuces, leeks, carrots, broccoli, swiss chard, peppers, green beans, cured onions, leeks, garlic, egg plant, okra, and carrots. If you don’t know how to cook the food, the farmer’s wife will share her family’s weekly menu and easy recipes as our family will be eating the same things! She will post “what’s in the bag” along with her weekly menu with recipes each week on the Black Creek Farm Blog and our Black Creek Farm Facebook Page.
We will offer pick-up locations at the South of the James Farmer’s Market each Saturday from 8:00-12:00, or for our Hanover friends, at Treats and Treasures at Ellyson’s Garage from 4:00-5:00 on Saturdays.
What is the cost?
You will receive 20 weeks of fresh, high quality produce from our family farm. The cost of our CSA is $500. We know that may seem like a high grocery bill, but that works out to just $25.00 per week for local naturally grown food. Also, we will always be giving you a better than retail value in your bag with some surprises each week. To become a part of our CSA, send us a deposit of $150 to reserve your spot, we are only taking a limited number of members to ensure our members are provided the very best produce so be sure to sign up quickly.
